Project Description

The project includes the construction of a new 28,300 sq. ft. early child education center for Emmanuel Family & Child Development Center (EFCDC) adjacent to its prior location in Kansas City, MO. The new facility consolidated the classrooms from three buildings into one efficient school, allowing EFCDC to expand childcare services and lease commercial space to local businesses that support the mission of EFCDC.

Since 1990, EFCDC has been offering a wide array of services to the low-income community, including: (1) infant and toddler care, (2) before and after school programs, (3) emergency aid, and (4) health clinics. The health clinic has a satellite clinic onsite to offer a more comprehensive service offering such as medical assistance, well-child exams, and more immunizations.

Community Alignment

EFCDC has been a long-standing nonprofit in Kansas City, that has been serving the urban core of Kansas City since its inception in 1990. Its support from the community was evidenced by $725,000 Central City Economic Development Grant along with funding from private donations in the community. EFCDC has been a customer of CBKC since 2011 and has worked with CBKC over the last five years to make this project a reality.

The project is also in alignment with the goals of the Kansas City, Missouri community, the KC FOCUS Plan (the “Plan”) was reviewed. City officials and residents with the goal of creating a comprehensive plan for the community with definitive priorities and guidelines developed the Plan.

The Plan specifies the need to develop programs to “provide human services, such as adult daycare, multi-generational interaction, preventative health measures, child care, and social services for low-income residents”. In comparing the project to the Plan’s goals, it is apparent that the project was in direct alignment with those goals.
