The 25,000 sq. ft. Early Childhood Educational and Community Center has been developed for lease by the Second Street Youth Center (SSYC). The new development will enable the City of Plainfield to provide high quality early childhood education to 210 3-5-year-olds and 160 elementary school age children and their families. SSYC will retain its early childhood educational services and after school programming for over three hundred and seventy children which represents an increase of one hundred and thirty additional children receiving educational services at the new facility that currently occupied by SSYC as of September 2018..
SSYC has is able to provide high quality early childhood education through funding received primarily from the Early Childhood program funded by the State of New Jersey and administered by the Plainfield School District. SSYC receives homework support and stem based educational enrichment services. In addition, the center seeks to address food insecurity issues by providing meals on site through their Kiddie Café program in conjunction with the Food Bank of New Jersey and shelf stable food packages on Fridays for students and families who are in need to support their weekend need for nourishment.
