Project Description

CBKC provided $5 million of NMTC allocation to support the acquisition and redevelopment of 43,519 sq. ft. of community service space to serve as the permanent food bank in Topeka, KS for Harvesters Community Food Network (the “Project”).

The Project provided Harvesters more space and a permanent residency in Topeka, KS, allowing Harvesters to grow its capacity to deliver more meals to the community (increasing from 15.2 million meals to 18.7 million) while also providing more cold storage space to provide healthier options to food insecure individuals in a 16 county area in northeastern Kansas. The financing also helped Harvesters obtain mobile food pantry trucks that provide on-sight food pantries to low-income areas throughout Topeka, Harvesters works closely with local nonprofits, community kitchens, homeless shelters and others in the community to bring food to those most in need.

In addition to providing food, the new Project provides more community space at the facility for Harvesters to increase its educational classes that are focused on health and nutrition. As a nonprofit with limited operational cash flow, the NMTC allocation was critical to providing the gap in capital needed to complete the renovations to the facility and expand Harvesters capacity and capabilities in the community.
