Hawaii Farming is a produce grower in Waimea utilizing modern techniques to cultivate three types of cucumbers (Long English Kamuela, Japanese Kamuela, and Keiki cukes minis), for direct sale to Hawaiian grocery stores including Costco and Safeway. Hawaii Farming currently operates a 544,500 sq. ft (12.5 acres) facility that produces 2.1 million pounds of cucumbers annually.
The organization maximizes efficiency by adopting a controlled environment greenhouse approach, using only a portion of the land and water typically needed for traditional agriculture. The result is a high-quality product that is locally grown, not shipped thousands of miles. This strategy enhances food security and underscores the farm’s role as a symbol of sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, Hawaii Farming provides the state’s residents with increased access to affordable, fresh, locally grown produce. Hawaii Farming is building a new facility to expand their product line to include lettuce. Utilizing NMTC funds, they are investing in a cutting-edge solar powered lettuce greenhouse and associated packhouse. The 117,638 sq. ft. controlled-environment facility includes a 200-KW solar installation, providing 90% of daytime energy needs.
Scheduled to yield 810,000 pounds of lettuce annually, this facility will allow Hawaii Farming to expand into new product offerings, increase their production capacity, and contribute to Hawaii’s food independence.
Hawaii Farming’s project will create 18 new permanent jobs, and further support 57 current employees. 100% of employees receive health and retirement benefits. 93% of these jobs are Accessible, requiring no college degree and are available to residents of low-income areas.
The farm prioritizes food security, addressing the state’s challenge of importing most of its food from thousands of miles away. The facility’s energy efficiency features will help ensure a minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
