The burden of substance abuse in rural West Virginia highlights the need for innovative approaches to curb the initiation of drug misuse and address current substance use disorders. The Highwall’s innovative approach will combine two aspects of community development: 1) an escape to outdoor adventure for trail riding enthusiasts and their families looking for unique Appalachian lodging experiences, and 2) a place for substance abuse recovery programs to host recovery trainings, events, and retreats.

The project will develop 8-12 lodging cabins expected to support the Hatfield McCoy trail system, which receives over 50,000 annual visitors; a retreat pavilion, which will serve as space for recovery events, graduations, reflections, meditations, and wellness seminars; and a restoration center, which will provide a wellness and fitness center for lodging residents, local citizens, and recovery groups.
