Project Description

The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians is responsible for delivering high-quality public services and investing in new business opportunities for its community. With the Lac Vieux Desert Health Center, the band is accomplishing both goals. By partnering with Chickasaw Nation Community Development Endeavor (CNCDE), the band used New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) to finance this project. The new health center will create and retain high-quality jobs. It will give band members access to state-of-the-art medical and dental care while also attracting patients and customers from surrounding communities. The Lac Vieux Desert Health Center is located in Watersmeet, Michigan. This 33,700 sq. ft. health care facility replaced the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s dilapidated, undersized clinic. The new facility offers optometry, behavioral health, music therapy, diabetes prevention, and many other vital medical services. The center is also a revenue generating facility for the tribe by offering care to non-tribal residents of northern Michigan as well as a full-service pharmacy.
