Project Description

New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy is a permanent home for this not-for-profit, college preparatory, charter school (with an inclusive Marine Corps JROTC program) serving primarily at risk youth. The new facility, created from the renovation and adaptive re-use of two historic buildings on a former military base, with classrooms, science and technology labs, band room and library, creates an environment for students which will lead to higher attendance, grades and graduation rates.

New Orleans continues to be in desperate need of effective public education options for a historically impoverished and poorly-educated populace; Federal City’s immediate neighborhood suffers acutely from this condition. Federal City is directly adjacent to the new Marine Reserve Center Headquarters and currently contains a YMCA, full auditorium and other community facilities that NOMMA utilized as part of its campus.

58 permanent jobs were created and 22 retained over the first four years following the school’s inception. SECDE Ventures provided a NMTC allocation of $7,900,000. Valley National Bank acquired the New Markets Tax Credits for this Project.
