Project Description

North Flint Reinvestment developed the North Flint Food Market. The project involves the renovation of an existing 21,225 sq. ft., single-story, vacant building on the north side of the city of Flint. Upon completion, the renovated building will home the North Flint Food Market, a full-service, cooperatively owned grocery store. The grocery area, 17,600 sq. ft., will include robust produce, dairy, meat, and frozen food departments, including work and storage areas. An additional 1,300 sq. ft. room will function as a community event center, available for event rentals and informal gatherings.

North Flint Food Market will give members an opportunity to invest in their neighborhood while filling a void left by the nearby closures of large franchise markets in north Flint, a documented food desert. The NFFM co-op already has more than 850 members, demonstrating the strength of support that exists within the community. North Flint Food Market will create 42 new full-time equivalent jobs in a census tract where 41.3% of the population falls below the poverty line. 40 of these jobs are accessible to people with less than a four-year degree.
