Funding for the Oakland Civic Project was used to help transform the Oakland Auditorium and Calvin Simmons Theatre into a mixed-use facility that will provide arts organizations and nonprofits with much needed, affordable, performance, rehearsal and office space all under one roof. The 8,000-seat main arena will be converted to creative office space for a wide variety of arts and mission oriented nonprofit tenants. The Calvin Simmons Theatre will return as a performing arts center that will host a wide variety of music, dance, theater performances large meetings and corporate events. Supporting the main stage are two ballrooms that provide space for smaller events, rehearsals and break-out sessions. A large basement will provide additional spaces for meetings, rehearsals, community gatherings and storage. The project is projected to create 282 full time jobs, and 127 construction jobs.
