A $1.5 million dollar New Markets Tax Credit funding deal was awarded to the Molokai Land Trust for an Operations and Service Learning Center on Farrington Avenue, in Kualapuu. The project involved the construction of a new center and constructing an on-site native plant nursery. The center delivers educational programs. Finances the working capital needs of a Federally Qualified Health Center located on Hawaiian home land. The project will address the health needs of the low-income individuals in the surrounding community regardless of a person's ability to pay. The $7.2 million facility will be a gateway for community learning, employment training, and e-commerce business development; and will also provide Internet access, distance learning and technology training. A new clinic expanded its current size by four times, and grew its scope of services to include primary care, behavioral health, nutrition, case management, and an in-house pharmacy to serve an estimated total of 8,500 patients in the Nanakuli community.
