Project Description

The Urban League of Metro St. Louis purchased the Victor Roberts building located at 1408 N. Kings highway and adjacent lots to renovate for use as its headquarters, program space and tenant retail space. The 205,000 sq. ft. commercial center will promote economic growth, create new jobs and foster entrepreneurial endeavors and community wellness for the City of St. Louis and surrounding communities. Nostalgically known as the Old Sears Building, the massive facility has long been integral to the social and commercial lives of the African American community. Built in 1928, Sears was the only major department store accessible to African Americans in North St. Louis. The building will be the new headquarters for ULMSL and its 48 human capital programs that serve 130,000 low-income clients. Currently, ULMSL’s programs are spread across 20 locations, creating a barrier for its most vulnerable populations. The modernized space will include the Vaughn Cultural Center, a hydroponic urban farm, and upgraded retail offerings on the ground level.
