Project Description

Founded in 1964 and established as a nonprofit in 1967, the Spanish Speaking Unity Council of Alameda County, Inc. (“The Unity Council or TUC”) is a social equity development corporation with a 55 year history in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland.

The organization’s mission is to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn and thrive. TUC was established at the height of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and was a commitment by local community leaders who wanted to advance a substantive representation of local residents in political and policy decisions in Oakland and the surrounding communities.

Thanks to NMTC financing, TUC will transform the long vacant historic Masonic Temple into Junos Fruitvale, a three-story, 10,000 sq. ft. community hub for entrepreneurs, local businesses and nonprofits, and artists in the heart of the Fruitvale:
