The project involves the $12.2 million renovation and/or expansion of two buildings supporting the work of the Pittsburgh Glass Center (“PGC”), a local nonprofit, public-access education center, art gallery and glass studio.
The main building will be renovated and expanded from 16,000 sq. ft. to 27,000 sq. ft. by building a second story over the current parking lot. The renovated space will allow PGC to engage more people in its existing facility while the new expansion will permit it to host pop-up events and exhibitions.
The project also includes the redevelopment of a separate 8,000 sq. ft. building two blocks away that will house visiting artists and tech apprentices and will allow space for community programming in a gallery space with street frontage on Penn Avenue.
Building America CDE in partnership with MBS Urban Initiatives CDE and U.S. Bancorp Community Development invested in the expansion and renovation of a 27,000 sq. ft. local nonprofit, public-access education center, art gallery, and glass studio.
The Pittsburgh Glass Center is a community builder and a hub for innovation and creativity. The largest art facility in the East End of Pittsburgh, which has been the catalyst to the growth of Penn Ave. Pittsburgh Glass Center, a local nonprofit, will shape the next generation of glass artists and makers in Pittsburgh, grow Pittsburgh’s creative economy, and connect the region’s history as a major glass producer.
The renovated space will allow PGC to engage more people in its existing facility, while the new expansion will permit it to host pop-up events and exhibitions. The glass center brings overall economic prosperity to the neighborhood.
