Project Description

This transaction will finance the renovation of a vacant building near Madison, WI into a 21,500 sq. ft. building that will serve as the McKenzie Regional Workforce Center to educate and support predominantly minority low-income youth and women in careers as plumbers, carpenters, electricians and other trades. The McKenzie Regional Workforce Center will provide young people with hands-on job training, certification, apprenticeships, and job placement in careers such as plumbing, construction, HVAC, and welding. The project will also feature an Entrepreneurship Center, teaching skills in business, marketing, finance, and other applicable fields. The demographics of participating individuals will predominately include low-income, minority youth as well as women who might otherwise be ‘less interested’ in entering the trades. The participants will be encouraged to participate starting in middle school, while the main student base will comprise individuals from Sophomore – Senior year of high school with flexible learning arrangements or after school learning avenues. These upper-class participants will be eligible for paid internships and on-site construction work and will be overseen and mentored by construction trade partners. Upon graduating with certification, participants will be in line for area trade jobs that are well paid and in great demand.
