NMTC financing helped Howard University’s Center of Excellence in Housing and Urban Research and Policy (CHURP) generate $15.5 million in working capital to help fund scholarships and housing research. The project includes $1.9 million for a scholarship fund supporting up to 40 students and $4.2 million in additional tuition assistance for low-income students, among other initiatives.
According to the Washington Business Journal:
Another $400,000 would be used to recruit students from other departments to join the CHURP research teams learning to implement new data science, and could then in turn intern at D.C. Housing or similar organizations.
Howard University, meanwhile, is arranging for about $5.1 million to be directed to helping students and prospective students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, navigate the college’s enrollment process and financial requirements. It will also provide $4.2 million in scholarships for about 3,200 low-income students and another $900,000 for mentoring support and tutoring, according to a DCHE.
