The construction, rehabilitation, and development of a new gastrointestinal and endoscopy center in Abilene, Texas, located within a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area. The center is adjacent to Hendrick Medical Center’s main campus and directly connected to GI physician offices, creating an integrated hub for care. Prior to the project, the sponsor struggled to provide consistent, emergent GI coverage across its service area, often resulting in patient transfers to distant metropolitan hospitals – delaying care due to the absence of gastroenterology or endoscopic services within a 100-mile radius. The new facility has helped alleviate pressure on the hospital’s main operating rooms, enabling a focus on more advanced procedures as the hospital works toward a Level II Trauma designation. Critically, the center is the only freestanding facility in Abilene that serves Medicaid recipients and patients unable to pay for care.
